Why should I get Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials helps prevent the vast majority of cyber-attacks. Even a simple virus or piece of malware could result in loss of company and client data, disrupt your cash flow and take up staff time. An attack could also put off your customers, stop you trading and damage your hard-earned reputation. It could also be reported in the local media. Loss of data could breach the Data Protection Act and lead to fines or prosecution. (GDPR replaces the Data Protection Act from 25 May 2018)
Having a Cyber Essentials badge will
- Protect your organisation against common cyber threats
- Show your customers you take this issue seriously
- Enable you to bid for some Government contracts.
The government is improving cyber security in its supply chain. Since 1 October 2014, all suppliers must be compliant with the new Cyber Essentials controls if bidding for government contracts which involve handling of sensitive and personal information and provision of certain technical products and services. Requires the organisation to complete a self-assessment questionnaire, with responses independently reviewed by an external certifying body (Telkeda). Available either as a self-assessment, or guided assessment by Telkeda, Cyber Essentials Certification is a realistic and affordable way for SMEs to prove that they are following cyber best practice.
